Reinstalling Microsoft Office 365 (Microsoft 365) is a common solution for fixing errors, improving performance, or resolving update issues. The good news is that reinstalling Office does not delete your personal files such as Word documents, Excel sheets, or PowerPoint presentations. However, taking a few precautions ensures that your data remains completely safe throughout the process.
Back Up Your Data
Before starting the reinstallation, it is always a good idea to back up your important files. You can store your documents in OneDrive, which automatically syncs your files and keeps them accessible after reinstalling Office. Alternatively, you can copy your files to an external USB drive or another secure location on your computer, such as the Documents or Desktop folders. This step acts as a safety net in case anything unexpected happens.
Verify Your Microsoft Account
To reinstall Office successfully, you need access to the Microsoft account linked to your subscription. Visit your Microsoft Account and ensure your subscription is active. This account will be required to download, install, and activate Office after reinstallation.
Uninstall Microsoft Office
The next step is to remove the existing Office installation from your device. On Windows, you can do this through the Control Panel by navigating to Programs and Features, selecting Microsoft 365, and clicking Uninstall. On a Mac, open Finder, go to the Applications folder, select all Office apps, move them to the Trash, and then empty it. This removes the main application files from your system.
Perform a Clean Removal
For best results, it is recommended to remove any leftover files that may cause issues during reinstallation. You can use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant to perform a deep cleanup. This tool helps eliminate hidden files and resolves potential installation conflicts.
Reinstall Microsoft Office
Once the previous version is removed, you can reinstall Office. Go to the Microsoft 365 website and sign in with your Microsoft account. From there, click on the Install Office option, download the installer, and run it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.
Activate Office
After installation, open any Office application such as Word or Excel. Sign in using your Microsoft account, and your subscription will automatically activate. This step confirms that your Office suite is ready to use.
Access or Restore Your Files
After reinstalling Office, your files will still be available. If you stored them in OneDrive, they will sync automatically. If they were saved locally on your computer, you can access them from their original folders. For files stored on an external drive, simply copy them back to your system.
Additional Tips
Reinstalling Office does not remove personal data, but users of Outlook should back up their .pst files to avoid losing emails. If you use custom templates or macros, consider exporting them before uninstalling. Also, if you are reinstalling Office to fix issues, you might try the Repair option first, which is available in the Control Panel under Office settings.
